Thank you for this post. As a swimmer first and then a coach, I found myself in total resonance with this. I learned about pre-race anxiety the hard way, race after race. And now I try to pass on my experience to my athletes. But I believe they need to experience it firsthand to fully understand and overcome their fears.
That was so helpful to understand how the performance anxiety works. I always worried that those strong feelings make me less focused and less approachable, less connected. Trying to analyse past experiences I can see it wasn’t necessarily true, although I still wonder how others perceived me (my nervousness) at those events.
It’s good to know it will never completely go away, I just need to accept it being a part of doing things that matter to me. Thank you.
